Discover it Card

We want to encourage you to improve your credit and improve your family’s financial well-being. You may not need to apply for a credit card right now, but if you do, you should be armed with the basic facts about the “fine print,” common interest rates and the inside information about the way different credit cards work.

Standard Credit Cards

Unsecured credit or “standard” credit cards are ones offered by banks or other financial institutions which allow you to spend money up to their limit, and then pay off what you have spent over time. These cards provide nothing extra — no rewards, cash back or other perks. However, they often have a lower interest rate than other types of credit cards.  The national average interest rate for standard credit cards is about 15%.

Different Types of Rewards Cards

Cash back rewards cards provide an average of 1% back in rewards on purchases, with amounts varying depending upon the card and total amount you spend. Often, cash back cards have an annual fee, which offsets the percentage of purchases provided back to the customer. If you can pay your balance in full every month, this type of card could earn some money for you. At 15.21% average Annual Percentage Rate (APR), cash back rewards credit card rates are similar to standard credit cards.

Travel, retail or gas rewards cards offer specific points-based cards which provide perks in the form of free lodging, airline travel or “frequent flier” miles, or rebates on purchases from specific retailers, like Amazon.com or gas companies. These cards have higher interest rates than all other types of cards, 18% on average or more. They are only a good choice if you do a lot of driving, or if you always shop at a certain retailer. Remember that in general, the more retail credit cards you have, the lower your credit score, so use caution in applying for and using a retail credit rewards card.

Other Types of Cards

Business credit cards are provided to people who own and operate an incorporated business. With interest rates averaging two to three percent less than standard personal credit cards, some business cards can offer a better deal. However, they are best used by small businesses to help keep track of business expenses for tax and management purposes. Student credit cards have come under fire recently, for high interest rates and for offering students too much opportunity to overspend and ruin their credit before they get started. Used responsibly, however, student credit cards could help in establishing credit for future important purchases.

You may not want any type of credit card right now. But if you should change your mind, don’t forget the advice we reported from investor Mark Cuban in our money tips from wealthy people: pay off the card every month and you will not spend any money in interest.
